Getting around Nadi
In & Around Nadi
There are regular domestic flights by light place between Nadi and Suva, costing from F$86 to F$103. Local buses are a cheap and are an interesting way to get around the islands, and Viti Levu has a good bus network with many different bus companies operating on a local level. Express buses link the main centres along the Queens and Kings Roads. The main bus stations are Lautoka, Nadi and Suva. There are also minibuses and carriers (small trucks carrying passengers) shuttling at regular intervals along the Queens Road. Taxis are plentiful, but drivers don’t always use meters, so always remember to confirm the price in advance. Viti Levu is also easy to explore by car, but be careful of local drivers, as they can driver rather erratically at times. You may find it preferable to travel by bus, as this means you get to mix with the locals.
Orientation
The Queens Road heads south from Lautoka into Nadi, passing Nadi airport (9km north of Nadi town) and crossing the Nadi River. The road becomes Nadi’s main street. Turn right at the T-junction and the Queens Road continues to Suva, while to the left the Nadi Back Rd bypasses the busy centre and re-joins the Queens Road back near the airport. The road to the Nausori Highlands leads off into the mountains from the Nadi back Rd.
The market, bus station, post office and telephone exchange are downtown to the east of the main street.
Between the mosque and the Nadi River bridge, just north of town, Narewa Rd leads west to Denarau Island, 6km off the Queens Road. The 255-hectare island is reclaimed mangrove swamp and has dark sand beaches, which may be disappointing for some. It has Nadi’s two most up market resorts and the Denarau Gold & Racquet Club. Most tours and boat services to the Mamanuca Islands depart from Denarau Marina. <>Wailoaloa Road also turns west off the Queens Road (to the right if you are coming from the airport) near West’s Motor Inn Wailoaloa Beach is about 1.75km from the highway. To get to Newtown Beach turn right off Wailoaloa Rd after 1.25 km and continue for another 1.25km. Here there are several budget places to stay, a golf course and the Turtle Airways seaplane base. You can also get to Wailoaloa Beach along Enamanu Rd.
